Leafing through different design magazines during the several train journeys I have gone on lately, I have found some striking pieces of furniture, both contemporary and classic, and I would like to share them here in the blog. So, from this month onwards, I will bring together a small collection of objects that have caught my eye during the previous month.
APRIL 2014
This month is the centenary of Hans J. Wegner`s birth (2 April 1914 – 26 January 2007), one of my favourite designers and the creator of the armchair Teddy Bear, an outstanding mid-century masterpiece. Another timeless jewel is the 1910 sofa Kubu designed in 1910 by the Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann, founder of the Vienna Secession. The Japanese designer Nendo is represented by two pieces, Akimoku chair, a revised version of the bentwood furniture workshop Akaita Mokko`s Windsor Chair, and a beautiful porcelain tableware. From the Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milan 2014 I love the elegant modular sofa (Love me) Tender by Patricia Urquiola and the cosy and youthful Nubilo by Constance Guisset, both featuring soft and organic shapes. Other important and recent fairs, Stockholm and Cologne, have also introduced strikingly beautiful pieces, such as the wooden chair Nadia designed by Jim Kuramoto using traditional shipbuilding techniques, and the day bed Kulle with an original bubbly surface created by the recently graduated German designer Stefanie Schissler. A geometric Italian floor lamp from 1969, Jaime Hayon`s tableware for the traditional Japanese porcelain company Choemon, a pair of bamboo baskets reinforced by a rubber coating, and a sculpture by the Austrian artist Erwin Wurm complete this month`s selection of objects of desire.
